Salt Lamps Explained and the Benefits of Negative Ions

One of my most used Christmas presents I received this year is my Himalayan salt lamp. There are a lot of health claims out there regarding salt lamps, but not many scientific studies to clearly determine what’s accurate and what’s not. The main basis for these health benefit claims is that the salt lamps produce negative ions. Salt, all on its own, absorbs water in the air including the dirt and pollen within the water vapor. With the addition of the heat from a candle or bulb the water evaporates and negative ions are emitted. Here are the benefits of negative ions and what this means for salt lamps.

Salt Lamps Explained and the Benefits of Negative Ions

Positive vs Negative Ions

Ions are molecules which have either gained (negative) or lost (positive) an electron or electrical charge. While both are everywhere, positive ions come from electronic devices such as cell phones, computers, or televisions, as well as lightning storms.  Negative ions are found exponentially more in nature, particularly in places with moving water like waterfalls or beaches.

Positive ions are proven to have negative effects on our health. Negative ions, at the least, cancel out the positive ions and thus counteract their detrimental effects. It is believed that negative ions may have their own additional benefits as well.

Potential Health Benefits of Negative Ions

Exposure to negative ions has been shown to:
-increase alertness and mental energy
-decrease germs in the area and thus reducing sneezing, coughing, and other throat irritation
-increase serotonin production which helps treat stress, migraines, insomnia, and depression
-improve ciliary activity which helps treat conditions of asthma and bronchitis
-reduce stress and increase recovery from stress
-kill airborne bacteria

There is still debate, however, regarding whether or not a salt lamp emits enough negative ions to make a difference. You can find a vast amount of anecdotal evidence from people who have experienced improved health after using a Himalayan salt lamp. Whether this is true or a placebo effect or correlation, I don’t know. Regardless of it’s proven effects, I enjoy my lamp. I love the way it looks and, at the very least, the warm amber glow it emits benefits my soul.

I too love my salt lamp and have it on every night (I use a little tea light in mine). I also enjoyed some sessions of salt therapy recently (relaxing in a room made entirely of salt), it’s amazing for people who suffer from allergies, insomnia and so many other issues. The benefits are amazing! I need a salt lamp in every room of my house!

That’s awesome! Oh wow, I’ve never heard of salt therapy. A room made entirely of salt sounds really cool. I’ll have to see if there’s anything like that near where I live.

I learnt something new today, never knew Salt Lamps had all those benefits you mentioned. I am housesitting at present and they have a salt lamp which I turned off thinking it was just another low light lamp that I did not need on, now I know different lol! Many thanks for educating me today 🙂
