How to Clean Your Mattress and Get Rid of Dust Mites

While I’m sure you regularly wash your sheets and pillowcases, can you remember the last time you cleaned your mattress? I hate to break it to you, but there can be a lot of unpleasantness building up in there – dust, dead skin cells, dust mites and their droppings, and other allergens. In fact, there are anywhere from 100,000 to 10 million mites inside a typical mattress. For the most part dust mites are gross yet harmless, but some people have an allergy to them. If you have a persistent runny nose, cough, or watery eyes this may be your issue.

When you’re spending around 8 hours a day in your bed, you want it to be a healthy environment. Here is a simple, inexpensive way you can deep clean your mattress and get rid of dust mites with natural ingredients.

How to Clean Your Mattress and Get Rid of Dust Mites

Natural Mattress Cleaner

-1/2 c baking soda
-3-5 drops lavender essential oil

Pour baking soda and essential oil into a jar.  Shake to combine.
Sprinkle mixture through a sieve in a light dusting over the entire mattress.
Let sit for at least 1 hour.
Thoroughly vacuum the mattress, ideally using a handheld, hose, or upholstery attachment.

The baking soda draws out dust, moisture, and odours, and absorbs them. Then you vacuum it all away. This study determined that using essential oils is an ecofriendly, biodegradable method for controlling dust mites. Lavender essential oil in particular is antimicrobial and has a fresh, relaxing scent. Between the sedative effect of the lavender and the peace of mind knowing those dust mites are gone, you’ll be sure to sleep soundly after using this natural mattress cleaner.

You can implement this cleaner for your mattress topper or pillows as well.

Thanks! No, I don’t use Lysol products because of their potential toxicity. If you look them on a site like the Environment Working Group’s (, they have a solid F rating.
