Get Rid of Fruit Flies Naturally – Trap and Repellent

A couple weeks ago given a pretty huge amount of pears. (Yay! They’re one of my most favourite fruits.) Unfortunately as they have been laying out to ripen, I have developed a bit of a fruit fly infestation in my home. I have tried a lot of different methods to get rid of fruit flies in the past, and a friend showed me this cone trick just recently. It’s been fantastic, and I think I have finally found the best two strategies. Here is how to get rid of fruit flies with a trap and keep them away with a natural repellent spray.

Fruit Fly Trap

You will need:

-a jar

-a piece of paper

-tape

-bait – I have had the best luck with a simple piece of fruit

How to:

Place your bait into the jar.

Curl the paper into a cone with a small hole – just big enough for a fruit fly to climb in through. Tape it in place.

Place the cone onto the jar ensuring that the cone doesn’t touch the bottom while resting along the top.

Create a seal around the cone and jar to ensure the fruit flies cannot escape.

Fruit Fly Repellent Spray

You will need:

-spray bottle (tinted is best)

-lemongrass essential oil

-water

How to:

Pour 1/4 c distilled water into the spray bottle.

Add 10 drops lemongrass essential oil.

To use, spray around windows, over window screens, and around doorways.

Shake before each use.
