Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts. While we typically think of bacteria being bad, there are beneficial bacteria as well that live in and on our bodies and help keep us healthy. Probiotics are a way of replenishing and balancing out these good bacteria in our systems. Here are five reasons to take probiotics to keep your body functioning well.

1. Gut Health
Probiotics help food move through the digestive system. Research has shown they can be used to treat diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammatory bowel disease.
2. Skin Conditions
Some researchers believe there is a gut-brain-skin connection and that the gastrointestinal tract can contribute to acne. Studies have shown a reduction in acne, eczema, and rosacea with probiotic treatment.
Probiotics have also been thought to have an impact on the immune system. Studies showed specifically a reduction in the symptoms of hay fever and grass pollen allergies.
4. Mental Health
Some research has shown probiotics to have an effect on mental health by reducing negative thoughts and the frequency of sad moods.
5. Vaginal Health
The vagina has its own delicate ecosystem of bacteria. Studies have shown that probiotics can improve cure rates and prevent recurrences of bacterial vaginosis (the most common infection) and possibly yeast infections.
For the past two weeks I’ve been taking Nexabiotic, a doctor formulated probiotic supplement which contains 23 strains of probiotic organisms. In fact, each dose contains 34.5 billion colony forming units which I think is pretty amazing. Something unique about this company is that the capsules are coated to protect the probiotics from digestive acid until they make it into the stomach. I was also pleased to read that the capsules are vegetarian-friendly. The Nexabiotic probiotic supplements are even made in the USA which I love to see.
During these few weeks since I’ve started taking Nexabiotic I have noticed an improvement particularly in my digestive system and my skin.
Recently I’ve been eating out quite a bit because it’s summer and with summer there are visitors and events and I just want ice cream. With the probiotics I found these indulgences were not upsetting my digestion as much as they have in the past.
I also endured my PMS week which for me always includes painful cystic acne usually around my chin. But not this month! I couldn’t believe it. I’ve been so pleased with my results.
